VSNi was initially formed in 2000 as a spin off from Rothamsted Research (RRES) and the Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG), and remains partly owned by them.
Rothamsted Research (‘RRES’) is generally regarded as the birthplace of modern statistics in biology, and is often credited with the original invention of many statistical methods still in use today. Rothamsted was founded in 1843, but statistical research activities started about 80 years ago when the first Head of Statistics, the world-renowned R. A. Fisher (later Sir Ronald), was appointed. Researchers at Rothamsted have made many significant contributions to science over the years, including making advances in the fields of virology, nematology and soil science. In the early 1950s, RRES was one of the first institutions to introduce computing to statistics. Since then Rothamsted has developed several statistical applications, most notably the GenStat statistical system, which is now VSNi’s core product. NAG is one of the pioneers of mathematical, statistical, data mining and visualisation software. The services offered by NAG have been used by academic, government and industrial institutions globally for over 30 years. In 1971 NAG developed the first mathematical software library, which has evolved over the years and become the largest commercially available library of mathematical and statistical algorithms. To find out more, please visit NAG’s web site at www.nag.co.uk or, if you are based in North America, www.nag.com. Headquartered in Oxford, England, NAG has offices in Chicago, Munich and Tokyo and distributors around the world.
